The sculptures on this page were made with the same kind of mechanism and feature two parts that move back and forth or open and close. Because of weight issues I used 1/64" aircraft ply (birch) and 1/16" walnut and cherry veneer. There are other things in there as well, including dowels made of mystery wood and copper.

I think the most striking thing about these mechanical sculptures is your involvement with the piece. First of all, you have to hold it still to turn the crank. This means you actually touch it. How many kinds of art require touching? Not many. So touching immediately connects you in a tactile way. That connection is continued visually when you turn the crank. The sculpture changes shape and form as you do this. The three designs on this page have the same mechanics and materials with different designs.
