This is the second in the Mecanical Floor Sculpture series. The mechanics here are elemental: crank, chain and pushrods. The sculpture is not about mechanics so I have deliberalty left them unadorned. They do work and need to look nice, but the sculpture is not about pushrods and gears, it is about forms that move at the viewers will and forms that make a complete image without movement.
This Quicktime movie shows the basic movement of the sculptue. Click on the triangle to start.
The upper forms are made of formers and stingers covered with an irredescent fabric called sheer. This is a model airplane technique of creating form. I used it also in the basket forms below. You can see the formers with the stringers creating the shape.
The center form is conected to the shaft so it turns as the crank is turned.
The base is made of painted steel.
The basket forms are made the same way as the top, only there is no covering. The baskets surround the form and open to expose the form, changing the overall shape of the sculpture at the viewer's will.
The top forms are made by formers and stringers. The fabric is an irredescent sheer. The technique comes right out of Old Time model airplane technology and is effective for creating form with strength with very little weight.
Mechanically, this is very straight forward. The chain comes from a removable link style use in farm equipment. I made the gears from a template. The pushrods are poplar as well as the rest of the wood. The bearings are made of Ultra High Molecular Weight material and are wear resistant.
