Succor Creek is about the rock outcroppings in Southeastern Oregon. The drive through the canyon is only about 4 miles, but it is an amazing trip because the rock outcroppings look like undefined threats. In other words, the rock outcroppings have an undefined yet threatening presence.
This sculpture features the basalt columns thrusting up from the sides of the canyon. An aluminum plate with brass domes represents the hill side and split and carved painted pine represents the rocks. To show the scary presence of these rocks I included iron teeth. I also included the apparent source under the hill side using aquarium rock and painted aluminum flames.
This photo of the sketch site is devoid of any feeling and is the primary reason photos do not work when I try to convey the presence of nature. This problem first showed up when I was 10 years old.
