This piece is in the Ann Wien Elementary School in Fairbanks, Alaska. It is the last of the painted wood bas relief I have done and I think uses the technique to full advantage. The shapes are separate pieces put together at different heights so there is a lot of texture, the colors are lively, yet natural. There is a mix of aluminum in the background and as an added touch there are butterflies and bees suspended on wires on (read out of reach) the top edge of the sculpture so it is actually three dimensional in its own way. Size is 5' by 16', wood and aluminum.

One of the earlier painted bas relief sculptures installed in the Gym at Huslia School, Alaska. It measures 6' tall and 12' wide and features cut and routed wood in shapes mounted on plywood backing. This makes it basketball proof. The center portion is actually carved. The image features moose, which Huslia is known for and the salmon spawning river (Koyukuk) were the village is located. |
