Exterior art work has special needs because of its location and that strongly directs the look and feel of the final piece. One of the most important factors is installation. As much as two thirds of the cost can be in non art features such as concrete pad or fastenings systems. If the public is to interact with the artwork, then building and saftey codes on several levels must be attended to as well as the services of a certified structural engineer. Sometimes these constraints are so much there is little left for artwork. This makes public artwork extra challenging for me.

This sculpture features an emblamatic representation of the eagle. It is 12' high and 40' long an made of red cedar and aluminum. It is bas relief in that it projects from the wall about 18" in some places. As with most public art commissions the artist has little on no say in where the artwork is located. This is a terrible place for this sculpture. You would think they would at least paint the wall before installation. I also did a video of the progress of construction of this piece. In spite of the location, this is still one of my favorite pieces. |

At 24' high and 17' wide, this is the largest sculpture in the round I have done. Redwood and aluminum are the materials and I hid the fastenings with cast lead covers which because part of the design. The figure is a hollow form of welded aluminum as well as the fish seating underneath. This sculpture is located at the Indian Education School on the old Navy base in Sitka, Alaska and can be seen from about anywhere in the city.
I got the idea for the sculpture from watching bald eagles dive for bait the guys at the cold storage would throw out for them. I sold my fish at Sitka only rarely, but the trip was worth it just to watch the eagles.

There is seating at the base as well. Installation was daunting to say the least.

| Mountan Pod was intended as a play sculpture to be placed in the Women's jail at Eagle River, Alaska. It is an all aluminum design with rounded edges everywhere and places to crawl in and out of. The overall size is 12' x 8' x 8'. |
